1245 New Jersey: The Greenest Affordable Home in Kansas! (Under Contract)

1245 New Jersey is a Structurally Insulated Panel (SIP) dome with a goal for estimated costs of less than $50/month to heat and cool this 1,402 ft², 3 bedroom, 2 bath house —the greenest affordable home in Kansas, built by Tenants to Homeowners, a local nonprofit affordable housing organization. Click on this link to YouTube to see a time-lapse construction video!

Energy efficient features include a fully insulated slab, insulated steel entry doors, high performance Serious 500 series vinyl windows, R-26 vertical walls due to SIP construction throughout, R-33 dome walls, Energy Star heat pump water heater, R-40 roof and risers, Sealoflex monolithic roofing over the dome, 16 SEER air source heat pump, sealed ductwork and recycled fill.

The green interior has polished colored concrete on the main level, Energy Star appliances, CFL lighting throughout, cork flooring in the bathrooms, locally harvested and milled black walnut stair treads, recycled carpet in the upstairs bedrooms, Energy Star ceiling fans in each room, FSC maple window trim, low VOC paint and a green living roof over the front porch.

Sturdy as well as efficient, this home is engineered for 140 mph wind loads and meets Dade County, FL hurricane resistance

standards. This home will be sold at far below market value to a household of modest means, and will remain permanently

affordable through a formula resale price with the Lawrence Community Housing Trust Program. That means this affordable home will bring green living to many families in the future.

The Rhode Island Roost is a five–unit townhome development that began in 2009 and is set for completion in Spring 2010. These townhomes will serve as low-cost rental housing for families that are actively building their credit and/or reducing debt in preparation for purchasing a Housing Trust Home. By charging less than fair market rent and referring tenants to Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. for budget advice, TTH will offer families an opportunity to regain control of their finances and their housing options.

The ARO Tax Credit Affordable Rental Project is a unique opportunity to acquire and rehabilitate 20 fully accessible units that are currently fully occupied, but in need of repairs and upgrades after years of deferred maintenance. Once updated, these rentals will better serve the crucial need for safe, affordable and accessible rental housing.
